AVID Institute Strand Descriptions


Implementation Strands for Classroom Educators (teachers, instructional specialists and curriculum coaches): Year One

  • Beginnings
Participants will explore Student Success Skills, Organizational Tools, L-WICOR (Learning to Write, Learning to Inquiry, Learning to Collaborate, Learning to Organize, Learning to Reading) Lesson Framework and Partnerships through a developmentally appropriate lens for the early years of traditional elementary settings.

  • Foundations
Participants will explore the four component areas: Student Success Skills, Organizational Tools, WICOR (writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading to learn) Lessons and Partnerships through a developmentally appropriate lens for the middle years of traditional elementary settings.

  • Bridges
Participants will build upon the foundation of AE Foundations and strengthen the transition to more rigorous coursework in secondary courses. This strand provides a “bridge” between AE Foundations and the more rigorous content of the middle years of elementary and secondary settings.

Implementation Strands for Administrators: Year One

  • Embarking on the Journey
AE Liaisons and AE Site Principals are introduced to AE through the lens of AE’s Essentials and, more specifically, the 4 Pillars of Excellence (accountability, articulation, assessment, calibration) to promote cultures of high expectations for all students across all AE stages (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges) of implementation.

Strands for AE Participants: Year Two and Beyond

  • Maintaining the Momentum
AE Liaisons and AE Site Principals explore the AE Essentials through the lens of the certification document. Focus is placed on building commitment, not compliance, to strengthen and deepen implementation across all stages of AE (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges) and ultimately across the entire site.

  • The Art of Inquiry
Experienced AE Educators explore the levels of thinking and questioning across the content areas for all stages of AE (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges).

  • Just WICORize it

Experienced AE Educators utilize their own specific content guides or frameworks to delve deeper into exploring WICOR and L-WICOR frameworks as appropriate for their classroom settings (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges).
