AVID Institute Strand Descriptions


Implementation Strands for Classroom Educators (teachers, instructional specialists, and curriculum coaches): Year One

  • AVID Elementary: Beginnings Implementation
This strand is reserved for those educators that work directly with students who are EMERGENT LEARNERS within active membership AVID Elementary sites. Participants will explore Student Success Skills, Learning to WICOR Framework and Partnerships through a developmentally appropriate lens for EMERGENT LEARNERS in the elementary grade levels. This strand typically aligns with early elementary grade level expectations, as well as for second language learners and students with special needs. Grade Level/Site Teams will leave with a strong understanding of the AVID Elementary Essentials and the role of AVID Elementary Beginnings in the larger AVID College Readiness System. Additionally, participants will be better prepared to create smoother transitions as well as build stronger relationships across their site and feeder patterns.
Prerequisite: Contracted 2014–2015 AVID Elementary member site.

  • AVID Elementary: Foundations Implementation
This strand is reserved for educators that work directly with students who are INDEPENDENT LEARNERS within active AVID Elementary membership sites. Participants will explore the CORE of the AVID Elementary Stages through a developmentally appropriate lens for INDEPENDENT LEARNERS. Our CORE work focuses on Student Success Skills, WICOR (writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading to learn) Lessons and Partnerships related to building student independence in the elementary classroom. This strand typically aligns with upper elementary and middle school grade level expectations, as well as for students at all developmental levels within those settings. Grade Level/Site Teams will leave with a strong understanding of the AVID Elementary Essentials and the role of AVID Elementary Foundations in the larger AVID College Readiness System. Additionally, AVID Elementary sites will be better prepared to create smoother transitions and build stronger relationships across their site and feeder patterns.

  • AVID Elementary: Bridges Implementation
This unique strand is reserved for EXPERIENCED AVID Elementary educators that work directly with students in grades 5–8 within active AVID Elementary sites. In order to be successful in this strand, participants are required to have attended a Foundations strand at Summer Institute between 2007–2013 and to have interacted directly with students that have been exposed to AVID Elementary strategies for two or more years. Participants will build upon the CORE strategies provided in Foundations in order to increase rigor and relevant strategies through a developmentally appropriate lens to engage INDEPENDENT LEARNERS. Grade Level/Department and Site Teams will leave with a strong understanding of the AVID Elementary Essentials and the role of AVID Elementary Bridges in the larger AVID College Readiness System. Additionally, AVID Elementary sites will be better prepared to create smoother transitions and build stronger relationships across their site and feeder patterns.

Implementation Strands for Administrators: Year One

  • AVID Elementary: Administrators and Elementary Liaisons Level 1 – Embarking on the Journey
This strand is reserved for AVID Elementary Liaisons, Site Administrators or Central Office Administrators overseeing the implementation of AVID Elementary (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges) within active AVID Elementary sites. In the role of Instructional Leaders, AVID Elementary Administrators and AVID Elementary Liaisons engage in conversations and activities to promote and incorporate the skills and tools necessary to move from managers to leaders.
  1. Leaders will increase their leadership skills in order to implement AE Essentials with fidelity according to Instruction, Culture, Leadership, and Systems
  2. Leaders will become familiar with the framework, foundation, and principles of the Stages of AVID Elementary (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges) to vertically and horizontally align within the site and feeder pattern.
  3. Leaders will understand how AVID Elementary fits within the AVID College Readiness System to support students on their path to college readiness.

Strands for AE Participants: Year Two and Beyond

  • AVID Elementary: Administrators and Elementary Liaisons Level 2 – Maintaining the Momentum
This strand is reserved for EXPERIENCED AE Liaisons, Site Administrators or Central Office Administrators overseeing the implementation of AVID Elementary (Beginnings, Foundations, Bridges) that have attended previous Summer Institute or AVID Elementary Liaison Sessions. Building upon their experience with implementation of at least one year, AVID Leaders will engage in conversations and activities to maintain implementation and incorporate the skills and tools necessary to lead change.
  1. Leaders will build leadership skills in managing change in order to maximize their implementation of AE according to the AE Essentials.
  2. Leaders will assess the needs of their sites and identify gaps in implementation to design a multi-year plan for quality implementation.
  3. Leaders will advocate on behalf of AE as integral to the success of the AVID College Readiness System.

Prerequisite: Contracted 2014–2015 AVID Elementary member site and successful completion of AVID Summer Institute AVID Elementary administrative strand


  • AVID Elementary: The Art of Inquiry
This unique strand is reserved for EXPERIENCED AVID Elementary Educators that have implemented Beginnings, Foundations or Bridges for at least TWO years with their students on active AVID Elementary sites. Participants explore how to open doors to learning for all students by utilizing levels of thinking and questioning across all the core content areas. Participants will partake in the progressive approach of Beginnings, Foundations, and Bridges activities and lessons in order to strengthen inquiry skills related to each appropriate stage of AVID Elementary. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the power of Inquiry and the roles of the classroom teacher or instructional leader to ensure equity and access for all students.
Prerequisite: Contracted 2014–2015 AVID Elementary member site and successful completion of AVID Summer Institute AVID Elementary implementation or administration strand

  • AVID Elementary: Just WICORize It!
This unique strand is reserved for EXPERIENCED AVID Elementary Teams (Curriculum Coaches and Grade Level Teams)  for planning time, guidance and support to develop and create depth and breadth within their daily lessons (District specific curriculum) through incorporating AVID Strategies across all core content areas. Teams are required to bring  hardcopies of their site specific curriculum in the core content areas of Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies, and utilize the AVID Elementary L- WICOR and/or WICOR template to enhance their current lessons. Please be aware that Internet access is not available in this strand. Teams are guided and supported through the process and the power of WICOR and L-WICOR frameworks to strengthen lessons for success for all students at all stages of AVID Elementary implementation. Important: Due to the specific and unique nature of this strand, AVID Center will not provide lessons plans for teams that arrive without their district curriculum.
