Support For Dreamers
“If our students have the individual determination to rise to the challenge, then so must we” – Mary Catherine Swanson, AVID Founder
The fate of 800,000 individuals known as Dreamers has become a bargaining chip in Washington D.C, as politicians set forth and argue proposals. Many AVID educators and students are experiencing hopelessness and stress as the negotiations continue. At AVID, we know that we have a responsibility to educate ALL students. We sincerely say, “ALL means ALL” and, like most schools across the country, we support creating a safe space for citizens and immigrants alike in our schools.
Your voice is critical in persuading our representatives to protect DACA recipients’ rights. Contact your Representative and Senators. Review this call to action from the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS), for more on DACA and the DREAM Act and specifics to share when contacting your representatives.
There are many ways to continue to support these Dreamers, including contacting your representatives in congress to ask that they act quickly and compassionately within the next 90 days and pass legislation that puts these individuals—colleagues and students—out of limbo. We will continue to post contact information and share resources from other like-minded organizations and we encourage you to do the same with your colleagues and communities.
