Business Students Design College Pennants for Teachers In an effort to support Williston Middle School’s AVID program and promote a college going culture schoolwide, the 8th grade business students designed college pennants for teachers and staff members. Mrs. Taylor, the business teacher, contacted each staff member to learn their college alma mater. Then, each business student was assigned a teacher to create a college pennant for using Microsoft Publisher. The students had to include the teacher’s college logo and mascot on the pennant. They enjoyed researching the different colleges their teachers attended. The teachers hung their pennants in their classrooms to encourage students to ask about college. The project was a success! After only one day of pennants hanging throughout the school, students were intrigued and asking many questions about college. Williston Middle School |

AVID’s ‘Blanketeers’ Make A Difference! Benjamin Franklin observed over 200 years ago, “You tell me and I forget. You teach me and I remember. You involve me and I learn.” Sandburg Middle School’s AVID’s service-learning project involved the students, encouraging them to be active rather than passive learners this year. In May, Sandburg’s seventh-grade AVID class learned about Project Linus’ mission of providing love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Project Linus was named after the infamous Peanuts character that was known for always carrying his security blanket everywhere. After learning about Project Linus, the class agreed to participate in this rewarding and fun service opportunity for the benefit of needy children. Utilizing the PARC (Planning, Action, Reflection, and Celebration) model, the class designed the service-learning project. The PARC model ensures the success of any service activity because it involves students in every step of the process, from planning to celebration. The students raised funds, saved coupons to purchase the materials for the ten blankets, made the “no-sew” fleece blankets, and delivered the blankets to a local Project Linus chapter. The AVID students ended the school year by celebrating the success of the completion of Project Linus knowing that they had made a difference in the lives of others. Sandburg Middle School |

AVID Students Host Fabulous Fifties Museum The AVID seniors of Loudoun County High School organized a multi-generational project with the senior citizens of an assisted-living residence and local fifth graders. The AVID students videotaped interviews with the senior citizens speaking about life in the 1950s, when many of them were teenagers themselves. Then they integrated the interviews into a multi-media presentation that became part of a hands-on Fabulous Fifties museum. The fifth graders visited the various stations created by the AVID students on the food, fads, and fun of the 1950s. Everyone enjoyed learning about the “Elvis era.” Loudoun County High School |

AVID Students Make Books for Kindergarteners Mrs. Bellan’s AVID class at Riverglen Junior High School made books all about college and then read them to the kindergarteners at the local elementary school, Shadow Hills. The books were full of color and perspective and were used as entertainment to show young students how great college truly is and what it can do for them someday. “I loved the kindergarteners. They were so cute,” said one student. “What I admired most is that they enjoyed using their imaginations while learning all about college.” Another student added, “I loved their faces lighting up. It felt great to know that they enjoyed our books and used imagination to learn about future education and how to get there.” Riverglen Junior High School |
