SAN DIEGO – Dr. Eric J. Smith, former Florida Education Commissioner and currently serving as an adviser to the George W. Bush Institute’s Advancing Accountability program, was recently elected to the AVID Center Board of Directors.
2/21/2014 AVID Center and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Launch College Success Alliance
SAN DIEGO—AVID Center, a leading educational non-profit focused on college readiness, has formed a regional alliance with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an African American male fraternity focused on brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

2/18/2014 AVID Center Receives Grant to Expand College Completion Project Across U.S.
San Diego—National educational efforts took a major step forward to improve college persistence and graduation through the funding of a college completion project in 10 colleges and universities across the U.S. This five-year, $1.48 million grant was awarded by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to AVID Center, which will implement the project based on the AVID for Higher Education Student Success Initiative (AHE SSI).

SAN DIEGO—AVID Center is pleased to congratulate the El Monte Union High School District for being named the College Board Advanced Placement Equity and Excellence District of the Year.

2/10/2014 AVID Alumni Association Launched
SAN DIEGO—AVID Center is excited to announce the formation of the AVID Alumni Association. Six universities including the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, San Diego State University (SDSU), Spelman College, and the University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) have established AVID Alumni Association chapters on their campuses.

1/22/2014 AVID Participates in White House Roundtable
Washington, DC - AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) recently participated in a roundtable discussion on education at the White House. The discussion focused on the status, challenges, and opportunities for increasing educational attainment and other life outcomes for young Hispanic males.

12/19/2013 Record Numbers Attend AVID National Conference
SAN DIEGO—The 2013 AVID National Conference, titled “Leading the Way to College Success,” was held in Grapevine, TX, at the Gaylord Texan Convention Center from December 12–14, 2013. The tenth annual conference drew a record attendance, with more than 1,600 educators.

SAN DIEGO—Partnering with teacher education programs at both UT Arlington and UT Permian Basin, more than 600 professors, teacher candidates, and local school district personnel have piloted the AVID for Higher Education Teacher Preparation Initiative (TPI) since 2011.

11/5/2013 AVID Welcomes Nearly 500 New Schools to the AVID Family
SAN DIEGO – This fall, nearly 500 schools in more than 90 districts joined AVID and began implementing the AVID College Readiness System. Almost 200 elementary schools joined approximately 300 secondary schools in implementing AVID to help close the achievement gaps that exist in their schools.

10/30/2013 AVID Seniors Ready for College Success
SAN DIEGO – Ninety-three percent of the 2013 AVID seniors who participated in AVID’s annual data collection completed four-year college entrance requirements. The annual data collection conducted by AVID Center late last spring, gathered demographic and academic achievement data from AVID seniors as well as information about their plans for higher education.

SAN DIEGO – The AVID Center board of directors is pleased to announce that Dr. Sandy Husk will become AVID's CEO effective January 2014. Dr. Husk has served as a superintendent of schools for almost 18 years, most recently in Salem-Keizer, OR, where she has led impressive reforms that have positively impacted student achievement.

7/23/2013 AVID Districts Featured in School Administrator Article: Readiness in the District Ranks
“What is the value of a high school diploma? Not what it once was. A 2011 report from the Brookings Institution contends the value of a high school diploma has declined since the ‘70s and the 12th-grade milestone is no longer enough to secure a middle-class income…” writes AVID Center Executive Vice President Rob Gira in the May issue of School Administrator, an AASA publication.

GRAPEVINE, TX – Students in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD’s iUniversity Prep virtual school will be the first in the nation to have access to the proven college readiness strategies of AVID in a virtual learning environment.

7/12/2013 AVID Center – Rice University College Readiness Institute
SAN DIEGO – Participants from ten Houston-area school districts were highly engaged at the inaugural AVID Center and Rice University College Readiness Institute (CRI) held on the Rice campus this summer. The Institute, funded by the Houston Endowment, is one aspect of the partnership between AVID Center and Rice University, which is focused on supporting participating school districts to improve the enrollment, instruction, and performance in Advanced Placement® (AP®) and Pre-AP courses.

7/10/2013 Five California Educators Receive AVID Teacher Advocacy Awards
SAN DIEGO – An anonymous donor generously provided funds to AVID Center to create an award that would give AVID educators in California additional resources to enhance their work with their students. The AVID Teacher Advocacy Award was developed to support California AVID Elective teachers and site team teachers; improve AVID teaching; retain AVID teachers; share best practices and professional learning; and further the AVID mission.

6/20/2013 Dallas hosts 4,500 Educators at AVID Summer Institute
SAN DIEGO – Dallas will host more than 4,500 educators June 26-28 at the Hyatt Regency as teachers gather to learn strategies to improve student engagement, increase graduation rates and close achievement gaps in underserved student populations. The conference, led by AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, will feature local student and teacher speakers discussing how AVID has affected their academic and personal lives, as well as their plans for the future.

SAN DIEGO – AVID Center is launching AVID College Ready Radio, an internet radio show covering current efforts in preparing students for college and career success. Guests will include thought leaders in education and experts in the field of college and career readiness, as well as inspirational educators and students from the AVID world.

6/03/2013 Governor Abercrombie to welcome more than 1,600 AVID educators
SAN DIEGO – An established leader in preparing first-generation and underserved students for college, AVID Center is hosting its first Hawaiian Summer Institute in Honolulu, June 5-7. Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie is scheduled to welcome the educators and emphasize the importance of their work to the future of the state and nation.

4/11/2013 189 AVID Students Accepted into the Dell Scholars Program - Scholarships recognize students’ drive and determination
SAN DIEGO – AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students made up almost two thirds of the 300 students in the recently named Dell Scholars Program Class of 2013. More than $6 million in scholarships will be awarded to this year’s Dell Scholars to attend a college of their choice. Nationwide, 189 of the Dell Scholars participated in AVID.

4/08/2013 East Bakersfield High School Principal Selected to Distinguished AVID Principals’ Leadership Collaborative

3/19/2013 AVID Celebrates 15 Years in Texas!
SAN DIEGO – This school year marks the 15th anniversary of the AVID College Readiness System in Texas. In just 15 years, AVID has expanded from eight high schools in the San Antonio Independent School District to the current 897 schools or institutions across the state (724 secondary schools, 156 elementary schools, and 17 colleges/universities).
