While you support our students, we support you. When districts and schools implement the AVID system, they join a professional team of educators passionate about meeting the needs of students and they receive quality materials and ongoing assistance in many areas, including:

Curriculum Resources and Training


  • Teacher-developed resource guides and student materials to support the AVID elective class that are student-focused, based on best teaching practices in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) and support state and national content standards.
  • Write Path content-area, college-prep teacher guides and student materials that model content literacy skills in science, mathematics, history/social science, and language arts, for both regular and advanced courses, including AP/IB and Honors. In addition, a teacher guide for English Language Learners is available. All resource materials support both state and national standards.
  • AVID Path teacher guides and student materials that emphasize college and career planning and strategies for student success by focusing on time management and study skills for students in upper elementary through high school.
  • Tutor training resource materials for teachers and tutors that contain units on collaborative grouping, inquiry, Socratic seminar and reading/writing-to-learn strategies.
  • Ongoing AVID Path and Write Path curriculum training opportunities that include a Trainer of Trainer model that is available nationally throughout the year.
  • Curriculum updates via CD as new materials are developed.

Quality Assurances


  • Certification process identifying a continuum of three levels of implementation: Level 1-Meets Certification Standards, Level 2-At Routine Use, Level 3-Is Institutionalized.
  • Demonstration school calibration process and national recognition of selected demonstration sites.
  • National recognition of AVID sites that meet additional benchmarks as AVID Certified with Distinction schools.
  • Models of AVID sites representing various district contexts.
  • Models of AVID systems that achieve schoolwide and districtwide effects.
  • Regional/district directors who validate the site’s annual data collection, recommend site certification status, and provide ongoing outreach and support for AVID schools.

  • AVID School Website Creator – creates a website for each school’s AVID program where the school’s information, events, and assignments can be easily posted.
  • Contact management system – allows schools and districts to update their information and keep in contact with those in the MyAVID Online Community.
  • Online registration – ability to register for AVID Summer Institutes and AVID Center trainings online.

Program Enhancements

AVID offers a variety of resources and initiatives to enhance and expand AVID schoolwide on campus.

  • Accelerate middle school English language learners with AVID Excel, so they can easily transition to AVID and college prep courses at the high school level.
  • Use AVID Weekly to each critical reading skills in AVID and across content areas with recent monthly news articles and publications that include lesson plans.
  • Learn about how to give your rising 7th grade through rising 10th grade students Science and Math advantage with AVID’s Summer Bridge Program.
  • Maximize student success on SAT®, ACT®, and other college admissions tests with AVID Test Prep.

  • What it Takes: Pre-K-12 Design Principles to Broaden Participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, BEST: Building Engineering & Science Talent (April 2004)

    A review of the many education programs designed to impact low-income students in math and science found that AVID was one of the few that is supported by scientific, rigorous research.

  • AVID: A Comprehensive School Reform Model for Texas, Karen Watt, Ph.D., Darlene Yanez, and Griselda Cossio (2002-2003)

    This study determined that in Texas AVID has been a vehicle through which each district studied expanded access to rigorous coursework and experienced schoolwide impact.

  • Longitudinal Research on AVID, 1999-2000. Larry F. Guthrie, Ph.D., and Grace P. Guthrie, Ph.D. (June 2000)

    This study found that 95 percent of AVID grads enrolled in college, and more than half of them reported a “B” average or better.
