SXSW EDU Logo Voting is on for programming at the 2020 SXSW EDU Conference and Festival, and AVID is proud to have four session proposals in the running! SXSW EDU is a global conference offering compelling sessions and workshops, engaging learning experiences, film screenings, and networking opportunities for educators who strive to make an impact on the future of teaching and learning. The 10th annual SXSW EDU will take place March 9-12 in Austin, Texas, and AVID wants to take part in empowering educators and creating a better future for all students. This will be the destination for education thought leaders, like AVID, to share best practices and foster innovation in learning. To get there, AVID needs the support of its community, so please share this with your fellow educators and most importantly, VOTE! Voting is open through Friday, August 23!

What Will AVID Bring to SXSW EDU 2020?
Last year, nearly 13,000 people attended the conference from 41 countries across the globe! AVID can reach this global audience with these four powerful sessions that will provide educators with the inspiration to prepare all students for college, careers, and life. Take a look at AVID’s proposed sessions!

AVID’s first session proposal is a panel of four AVID alums. All minority males, they will share how their teachers helped them gain a sense of belief and belonging by learning how to advocate for themselves, map out personal goals, build an arsenal of soft skills, and turn learning into lifelong advantage. Participants will gain insights on how educators can foster student agency and resiliency.

Another session in the running for a spot at the SXSW EDU conference is focused on how NIKE partnered with schools to help AVID grow statewide in Oregon. Participants will learn how business and philanthropy can scale impact by partnering with educators and nonprofit leaders.

AVID also hopes to host a workshop from the one and only Ricky Ramirez, an AVID Teacher and Coordinator from El Paso, Texas who was recently featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. No matter how innovative a teacher’s curriculum is, effective learning rarely occurs without first building strong relationships. In this session, participants will learn how thousands of teachers like Ricky have tapped the wisdom of AVID’s professional learning to connect with and inspire students – truly reaching them before teaching them.

Our final session proposal is a workshop with AVID Learning Designer, Michelle Brummond. Participants will learn how to ignite curiosity by connecting students and educators with global communities to foster the promise of solving real-world problems. This workshop is grounded in social learning theory with an emphasis on intentionally teaching digital literacy and digital citizenship to prepare students for success in a global society.
