AVID, one of the nation’s largest professional learning organizations, awarded for response to growing demand from teachers to support the thoughtful implementation of digital tools for high-quality instruction.

San Diego, CA (January 2019): National nonprofit AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), developer of the college-readiness system now used by over 6,400 schools in 47 states across the U.S., today announced that its Digital Teaching and Learning (DTL) training designed to support the effective integration of technology into classroom instruction was awarded the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Seal of Alignment. The Seal of Alignment has recognized this professional development resource for helping teachers intentionally leverage digital tools to support high-quality teaching and learning.

Developed in collaboration with a diverse cohort of educators from across the country, AVID’s unique approach centers on best practices often overlooked by technology-focused professional learning. The curriculum is rooted in strategies that allow teachers to explore, experience, and apply digital tools in the classroom.

“Our research shows that 78% of teachers identified how to use technology to differentiate instruction as a top wish-list item for their professional development, and 52% of principals, who lead the PD decisions for their schools indicate this type of training is critical for student success,” said Thuan Nguyen, COO of AVID. “We look forward to continuing to help schools leverage their investments in technology resources to increase student achievement and provide students with new skills and learning opportunities.”

Over the course of its nearly 40-year history, AVID has become the go-to provider of professional learning for teachers to prepare students for college and career. The organization is responsible for training 70,000 educators each year. Reflecting teacher demand for a deeper understanding of how to use technology to differentiate instruction, in 2018, AVID launched a new professional learning initiative focused on teaching with technology.

“The Digital Teaching and Learning professional development program from AVID is a robust and engaging learning experience for educators,” said Mindy Frisbee, director of alignment at ISTE. “The program not only presents engaging research-based strategies, but it does so through modeling authentic learning activities. Teachers explore strategies and resources for digital learning while modeling and embedding collaboration, communication, and choice.”

The ISTE Seal of Alignment is considered by the edtech industry and educators as the gold standard for high-quality products and services aligned to the ISTE Standards. Products and resources submitted to the ISTE Seal of Alignment program undergo a rigorous review and are evaluated based on their pedagogical value and alignment to the ISTE Standards.

In addition to creating a new and relevant development opportunity for one of the largest professional learning communities in the U.S., AVID will continue to team up with some of the biggest names in technology – Microsoft, CISCO, Wonder Workshop, Lego and more – to ensure educators have the support and resources necessary to effectively integrate technology into their teaching.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit, proven college readiness system that closes the achievement gap. Today, AVID is implemented in approximately 6,400 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Canada and Australia.
