Transforming Literacy Secondary (2024–25)

Transforming Literacy Through Content-Area Reading: Secondary 6–12 (2024–25)

The Transforming Literacy Through Content-Area Reading: Secondary (6–12) Community of Practice engages secondary educators from all non-ELA content areas in leveraging discipline-specific reading to foster a culture of literacy. Participants will explore opportunities to provide students with diverse text types and activate background knowledge to support engagement with content and extend students’ depth of comprehension. Educators will experience the AVID Critical Reading Process, which engages students in strategies that build content-area literacy skills and break down barriers to rigorous content. This Community of Practice will empower every educator with the knowledge, strategies, and resources necessary to integrate disciplinary literacy and gradually release responsibility to students. All strategies, digital activities, and digital tools experienced in this Community of Practice can be leveraged in face-to-face, blended, or virtual learning environments.
