AVID is proud to celebrate three district leaders who have been named finalists for AASA’s 2026 National Superintendent of the Year Award. This prestigious recognition, presented by The School Superintendents Association, honors exceptional superintendents for their visionary leadership and commitment to advancing public education for all students.

AVID is proud to announce that Maryland Governor Wes Moore has issued a formal citation recognizing AVID’s outstanding service to the citizens of Maryland and celebrating AVID’s 45th anniversary.

“AVID is special because it truly feels like a family. Over time, they create strong connections with each other and develop a safe space where they can take risks, support one another and succeed together.”

“Through AVID, I’ve become a more self-determined student. ...It taught me to take ownership of my own education by setting my own goals, making informed choices, and working to achieve my academic potential.”

“Whether they are taking AVID classes as a course or not, AVID teaching has been embedded into all of the curricular areas. ...Our curriculum specialists have been using their skills and knowledge to work with our teachers so they can use that with their students. It’s very much trickling down to teaching and learning in their classrooms. That’s very important, I think, for us to say that, because it happens in all of the areas.”

Students in the program have found it invaluable for personal growth and college preparation. Senior Valerie Banos shared, "It's shown me you shouldn’t be scared to go out in the world and open yourself up in general. It's also shown me that there are a lot of scholarships that you are able to apply to."

Students are building real-world skills, such as communication, critical thinking, and academic confidence—one strategy at a time.

We specifically reach out to those enrolled in the AVID Elective program (Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college and career readiness program that teaches students academic and organizational skills to succeed in rigorous courses and gain admission to postsecondary education). These students show potential and motivation but need resources and encouragement to see college as part of their future.

When second grader Nolan proudly opened his organized binder at Sunflower Elementary, his excitement captured the attention of visiting educators—and demonstrated the power of AVID in action. From colorful dividers to hand-drawn cover art, his binder reflects more than just neat study habits; it shows how Lawrence Public Schools (LPS) in Kansas is preparing students for lifelong success. Through AVID, even the youngest learners are gaining the tools they need for college, career, and confidence.
