Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy proudly marked its designation as an AVID National Demonstration School with a special visit from New Jersey Commissioner of Education Dr. Lily Laux, joined by state and local dignitaries.
Sam V. Curtis Elementary Literacy Academy has officially etched its name into the history books of California education. Following a rigorous multi-year validation process, the school has been named an AVID National Demonstration School at the Elementary Level. “I feel very humbled,” said Principal Owen Ross. “It’s been a long time coming. The framework of the program is so impactful: for kids, for teachers, and for all of us. The impact on kids is tremendous.”

“Through AVID, I’ve become a more self-determined student. ...It taught me to take ownership of my own education by setting my own goals, making informed choices, and working to achieve my academic potential.”
“Whether they are taking AVID classes as a course or not, AVID teaching has been embedded into all of the curricular areas. ...Our curriculum specialists have been using their skills and knowledge to work with our teachers so they can use that with their students. It’s very much trickling down to teaching and learning in their classrooms. That’s very important, I think, for us to say that, because it happens in all of the areas.”
Students in the program have found it invaluable for personal growth and college preparation. Senior Valerie Banos shared, "It's shown me you shouldn’t be scared to go out in the world and open yourself up in general. It's also shown me that there are a lot of scholarships that you are able to apply to."
Students are building real-world skills, such as communication, critical thinking, and academic confidence—one strategy at a time.
We specifically reach out to those enrolled in the AVID Elective program (Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college and career readiness program that teaches students academic and organizational skills to succeed in rigorous courses and gain admission to postsecondary education). These students show potential and motivation but need resources and encouragement to see college as part of their future.
When second grader Nolan proudly opened his organized binder at Sunflower Elementary, his excitement captured the attention of visiting educators—and demonstrated the power of AVID in action. From colorful dividers to hand-drawn cover art, his binder reflects more than just neat study habits; it shows how Lawrence Public Schools (LPS) in Kansas is preparing students for lifelong success. A group of seniors at Holmes High School in Northside ISD is proving that hard work does pay off, and in a big way.
Tuscarora High School hosted a heartfelt celebration on Thursday, May 22, 2025, honoring its 10th graduating class of AVID seniors. The evening event brought together students, families, educators and administrators to recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2025 and the lasting impact of the AVID program at Tuscarora.
