Every educator wants students to leave their classrooms prepared for what's next. Yet creating consistent, schoolwide readiness experiences can be challenging. It takes aligned systems, empowered educators, and a shared commitment to college and career readiness to create the conditions where students can thrive.
The annual AVID Certification process helps schools measure progress, celebrate growth, and strengthen the conditions that support student success. Focusing on quality implementation and continuous improvement, certification helps school teams build educator capacity, strengthen student readiness, and create greater opportunities for every learner.
Helping Educators Turn Vision Into Impact
Research and experience consistently show that quality AVID implementation matters. The positive student outcomes associated with AVID do not happen by chance. They are the result of intentional systems, empowered educators, and sustained implementation that create opportunity-rich learning environments for students.
That is why AVID provides certification as part of its broader implementation journey. Through coaching, professional learning, and the AVID implementation tools, AVID helps educators and leaders strengthen their practice, measure progress, and create greater opportunities for students.
As educators work to strengthen readiness for all students, certification helps school teams answer critical questions:
- Are AVID practices being implemented consistently across the school?
- Are students developing the skills, agency, and opportunity knowledge needed for future success?
- Are educators equipped with the tools and support needed to create rigorous, engaging learning experiences?
- Are systems aligned around a shared vision of college and career readiness?
By focusing on these questions year after year, schools strengthen the conditions that support long-term student success.
A Roadmap for Growth and Student Success
AVID Certification is designed to help educators and school leaders grow their impact.
The process provides schools with opportunities to identify strengths and gaps, celebrate progress, and determine next steps for improvement. It reinforces a mindset of continuous learning and continuous improvement, helping leaders and educators build sustainable systems that endure beyond any single year.
Schools are certified or re-certified annually based on data from the previous school year, making the process both reflective and forward-looking. Each certification cycle gives teams a roadmap for strengthening implementation, building educator capacity, and expanding opportunities for students.
Rather than asking, "Did we do enough?" the process encourages schools to ask, "How can we serve students even better?"
Building Strong Foundations for Schoolwide Impact
Effective AVID implementation begins with a strong foundation and expands over time to increase impact across the entire school community.
At the secondary level, schools begin by building a high-quality AVID Elective. The AVID Elective serves as the foundation of a comprehensive AVID College and Career Readiness System. Using the Secondary Implementation Tool, schools focus on establishing the essential components of the elective before expanding AVID practices schoolwide.
This intentional approach helps schools move from strong program implementation to meaningful schoolwide transformation, ensuring that more students benefit from AVID's proven practices.
Elementary schools follow a similarly intentional pathway using the AVID Elementary Implementation Tool, previously known as the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI). The tool supports schools in strengthening instructional practices, creating coherence across classrooms and grade levels, building student agency and leadership, and using data to guide decisions.
Together, these AVID implementation tools serve as a roadmap that helps educators and leaders focus their efforts, strengthen implementation, and expand impact across the broader school community.
Certification Marks Progress on the Journey to Student Readiness
Throughout the year, educators, leaders, and Site Teams work to strengthen implementation and create meaningful learning experiences for students. The certification process gives schools an opportunity to reflect on that work, document progress, and identify opportunities for continued growth.
Earning certification or re-certification signals that a school is committed to:
- Sustaining high-quality AVID implementation
- Aligning systems around college and career readiness
- Supporting educator growth and effectiveness
- Creating greater access to opportunities for students
- Continuously improving student outcomes
In many ways, certification serves as a visible representation of a school's dedication to excellence and opportunity. It tells students, families, staff, and the broader community that the school is intentionally investing in practices that help prepare every learner for future success.
Celebrate Certification
Much like student achievements, graduation milestones, or academic accomplishments, certification represents hard work, collaboration, and perseverance. Behind every certification are educators who have strengthened their practice, Site Teams that have guided implementation, leaders who have championed a shared vision, and students who have embraced new opportunities for learning and growth. Certification celebrates the people doing the work and the progress they have made toward creating opportunity-rich learning environments for all students.
Celebrating certification acknowledges those efforts while reinforcing the importance of quality implementation.
It also sends an important message: College and career readiness does not happen by accident.
It happens when schools make intentional, sustained investments in systems that support student growth and opportunity.
Certification Is Not the Destination
At its core, AVID Certification is not the destination. Preparing every student for college, career, and life is the destination.
Certification is a milestone along that journey. It reflects the commitment of educators, leaders, and Site Teams who are continuously strengthening their practice, aligning systems around student success, and creating opportunity-rich learning environments where students can thrive.
With AVID as a trusted partner, schools use certification to measure progress, celebrate growth, and continue advancing toward their goal of ensuring every student is prepared for what's next.
