Transforming Literacy Through Content-Area Reading: Secondary 6–12 (2026–27)
Starting in June 2026

Transforming Literacy Through Content-Area Reading: Secondary Community of Practice is designed for secondary educators who want to deepen students’ access to rigorous content by embedding the AVID Critical Reading Process into daily instruction. This course focuses on building content-area literacy across all subjects—helping students read, think, and communicate like scientists, historians, artists, and more. Participants work with diverse texts, scaffold comprehension, and design lessons that develop academic thinking skills and support meaningful engagement with content.

Considerations

Transforming Literacy: Secondary is for non-ELA teachers to strengthen literacy components in the non-ELA classroom.

Transforming Literacy: Secondary does not focus on reading intervention.

Transforming Literacy: Secondary builds on foundational AVID professional learning. Participants should engage with this CoP after a prior professional learning experience with AVID.
